Chili Vanilla is a band packed with contrasts, a mixture of power and playfulness. Their music may be described as avantgard-pop – improvisation and cacophonous soundscapes meet propelling and accessible grooves. They deliver intense performances, where the tunes and the beat gets pushed and pulled to the point of breaking. Their eponymous debut album, produced by Audun Kleive, was released in 2012. Together with communicative interplay and exceptional performance skills, the band creates a unique and notable sound. Established in 2010 when all three members studied jazz performance at Sund Folk College, Chili Vanilla has played at all the major jazzfestivals in Norway - Moldejazz, Canal Street, Kongsberg Jazz festival, Oslo Jazz festival, Dølajazz and Nattjazz.
In 2011 they won “Jazz i sikte”, in competition with five other young jazz bands. The same year the band was chosen to play at Scandinavia's biggest showcase, by:Larm. In 2013 they did a showcase at “Jazz in a nutshell” and have done performances at various clubs in Norway and abroad, including Victoria Nasjonal jazzscene, Verftet, Bø jazzklubb, Dokkhuset, SMOG, Parkteatret, Sinus, Spor 5 and Moods in Zürich to mention some. The latter was a mini festival together with Farmers Market and Nils Petter Molvær. Their tune “Get Me” can be heard on jazzCD.no, a compilation of music from the norwegian jazz scene, produced by Norsk Jazzforum, The Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Music Norway. In spring 2014 they did a tour directed by Vestnorsk jazzsenter and Norsk Jazzforum together with pianist Andreas Ulvo (Eple Trio, Shining, Ellen Andrea Wang). ‘The latter voice/tuba/drums trio Chili Vanilla came across like the White Stripes with their thudding primal sound of earthy blues and rhytmic abandon. Vocalist Synne Sanden wailed convincingly over Steffen Granly oversized trumpet while peroxide blonde drummer Siv Øyunn Kjenstad kicked out some Seb Rochford-styled jams.’ Jazzwize Magazine. ‘It’s easy to start a play on words with this band’s name, but actually the name is describing the band really well with experimental jazz grooves combined with a strong but smooth vocal.’ (by:Larm news)
